Basic Stitching Supplies
In the instructions for what to bring to a workshop, the words “usual stitching supplies” are often included. Because this can mean different things to different people, here is a list of items that have come to be used by many Guild members. It can serve as a reminder if there are questions as to what might be needed for a given project.
The Basics:
- Name tag
- Scissors (embroidery, metal and/or paper)
- Needle threader
- Laying tool
- Thimble
- Extra needles - tapestry, embroidery and sharp needles in various sizes
- Notebook or paper for note taking
- Pen, pencil and eraser
If you typically use these at home:
- Light - must be battery operated (no cords allowed)
- Magnifier
- Floor stand or table stand or clamp - to hold your project and allow hands-free stitching
- Frame weight - to stabilize your framed piece on a table as you work with the frame in hand
These might also be useful:
- Ruler or tape measure
- Tweezers
- Straight pins
- Sewing thread in dark and/or neutral color
- ORT container - a mini tabletop receptacle for collecting odd remaining threads as you snip them
Tools for attaching ground fabric to stretcher bars:
- Rustproof thumbtacks
- Small hammer and removal tool
- Staple gun and staples
