Poinsettia Pin
This design was inspired by the work of the talented folks behind Contemporary Geometric Beadwork (CGB), an open-source initiative begun in 2011, with the goal of exploring and sharing discoveries made to create architectural beadwork.
Students will learn a basic CGB stitch called a "zig-zag" or rick-rack stitch. This stitch can be taken in interesting sculptural directions, building layer upon layer to create petals and a center bloom. Students can choose the original red and green colorway to create the Poinsettia Pin, or a blue and gold combination to create the Mariner’s Compass Pin. The completed design measures 3x3 inches.
The base of the poinsettia is two rows of Cubic Right Angle Weave (CRAW), which students will need to complete as pre-work. For anyone not familiar with this technique, it will be offered as one of the mini workshops in April.
The class kit will include the printed instructions, 10 colors of size 11 cylinder beads in shades of red, green and yellow, size 11 seed beads and rondelles, needles, thread, and the pinback.
Students must bring a beading mat or other surface for beading, a bead scoop or triangle for picking up beads and putting them away, and embroidery scissors for cutting thread. Lighting and magnification are strongly encouraged.
