Kumihimo Japanese Braiding
Please join us for this evening potluck dinner and meeting. Bring your favorite dish or dessert to share. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the business meeting and then the optional Kumihimo workshop, which will last approximately 1.5 hours. Registration is required for all meeting attendees (with no fee for those attending the potluck and business meeting only).
Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese form of braiding using multiple strands of cord and/or ribbon. Guild member Joyce Fath will lead us in learning this simple technique that can be extended to create complex designs. We will make bracelets using perle cotton and finish them with a clasp made from a button.
Color choices will be available. Different designs and patterns are possible by changing your braiding material, varying the thickness or number of your strands, using a round disk versus a square plate, or by adding beads to your braid.
Each kit will include a kumihimo disk, thread bobbins, a needle, #3 or #5 Perle cotton, and a button for the closure. Students will select their thread colors during class.
Students should bring sewing scissors, a measuring tape, and light or magnification as needed.
They can also bring specialty threads and a 3/4- or 1-inch sized button of their choosing if they would like to try the technique with other colors or textures.
